- *Abstract
-
Proteotoxicity-associated diseases and disorders are characterized by increased aggregation of certain proteins or amino acids inside and/or outside of the cell. Exemplary proteotoxicity-associated diseases include, but are not limited to, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, and Huntington’s, macular degeneration and spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy. Many of these proteotoxicity-associated diseases are also associated with aging.
UC Berkeley researchers have developed a technology for reducing protein misfolding and/or aggregation in a cell. The present disclosure provides methods of treating diseases and disorders associated with protein misfolding and/or aggregation with active agents that inhibit carnitine palmitoltransferase or reduce the level of mitochondrial heat shock protein.
