Sensor for Monitoring Corrosion of Steel Structures
Researchers at Purdue University have developed an automatic sensor that can measure changes in electrical properties of steel to find early signs of corrosion damage. The system consists of a metal that is the same composition as the metal being monitored and a corrosion-resistant metal that functions as an electrical conductor. As the test metal sample corrodes, the changes in electrical conductivity of the meter are wirelessly transmitted for automatic data acquisition. This data can be accurately used to correlate the electrical conductance change of the metal to the extent of corrosion.
