Sensor for Monitoring Corrosion of Steel Structures
- 總結
- Researchers at Purdue University have developed an automatic sensor that can measure changes in electrical properties of steel to find early signs of corrosion damage. The system consists of a metal that is the same composition as the metal being monitored and a corrosion-resistant metal that functions as an electrical conductor. As the test metal sample corrodes, the changes in electrical conductivity of the meter are wirelessly transmitted for automatic data acquisition. This data can be accurately used to correlate the electrical conductance change of the metal to the extent of corrosion.

- *Background
- Corrosion is a natural chemical process that erodes steel structures over time. Chloride ions are abundant in nature and greatly contribute to the inevitable weakening of steel structures through the corrosion process. Many industries, such as construction, transportation, and energy, are greatly impacted by corrosion problems, which means the steel must be monitored constantly. Unfortunately, the costly, inefficient, and subjective methods currently used to assess corrosion damage can be inaccurate and, therefore, dangerous.
