B-18 A fish model that is transparent throughout life

Technology Benefits
Has already been used as an experimental model fish in many areas of biological research including pathology, toxicology and embryology Has smaller genome and shorter generation time than another popular model fish, the zebrafish Changes can be easily observed in its internal body structure from outside due to its highly transparent body
Technology Application
Medical research to observe disease progression and healing process by developing medicines Test fish to observe the effectiveness of water pollutants
Detailed Technology Description
The resulting fish is a vertebrate model with a transparent body in the adult stage, as well as during its embryonic stages. The main internal organs such as the brain and heart in living adult fish are visible to the naked eye or with a simple stereoscopic microscope. Another feature of see-though medaka is the ability to observe specific organs by producing targeted luminescence through the use of green fluorescent protein. The fish remains healthy and fertile.

*Abstract
Medaka (Oryzias latipes, aka Japanese killifish) is widely used as a simple and useful experimental animal due to its small body size (2 - 4cm), a short term for sexual maturation (two months), a wide distribution, a small genome size (about 1/5 of mammalsΓÇÖ), and its sex determination (X & Y chromosomes.) The embryo is especially useful to observe its internal structure due to its transparency. The adult medaka, however, has a darker body due to its four types of pigment cells in the skin, and its color makes internal organs difficult to observe.Researchers at Nagoya University have successfully removed the pigments from the adult fish body and generated a see-though adult medaka.
