*Abstract
The technology provides a neuronal cell death inhibitor comprising a compound having an inhibitory activity on the production and/or release of glutamate in activated microglia. In contrast to na├¤ve cells, activated microglia produce glutamate with glutaminase and release it through gap-junction. By inhibiting the production and/or release of glutamate in microglia with either glutaminase or gap-junction inhibitors, neuritic bead-like degeneration or neuronal cell death can be inhibited. With the screening method, we have synthesized several compounds using above inhibitors as lead compounds.
