- Useful to search new compounds suppressing neuronal damage in a various conditions.The newly synthesized carbenoxoloneprodrug(Compound B) effectively suppressed glutamate release by activated microglia, and suppressed microglialneruotoxicity. Compound B could ameliorate disease progression of model animals for various neurodegeneration. The compound, thus, could be a candidate for treating neuronal degeneration in a variety of neurological disorders.

The technology provides a neuronal cell death inhibitor comprising a compound having an inhibitory activity on the production and/or release of glutamate in activated microglia. In contrast to na├¤ve cells, activated microglia produce glutamate with glutaminase and release it through gap-junction. By inhibiting the production and/or release of glutamate in microglia with either glutaminase or gap-junction inhibitors, neuritic bead-like degeneration or neuronal cell death can be inhibited. With the screening method, we have synthesized several compounds using above inhibitors as lead compounds.
