Method of Producing Chemicals
- Summary
- Engineering Yeast to grow on Methanol.
- Technology Benefits
- Environmentally friendly.
Produces chemicals from waste gases or biomass.
Affordable.
In the near-future, methanol will have a lower economic impact than alternatives such as sugar.
- Technology Application
- Growing yeast on methanol from landfill gas and wood/lignocellulosic waste.
Use in conjunction with other engineered pathways to produce valuable chemicals, biofuels and pharmaceuticals.
- Detailed Technology Description
- This invention enables the yeast S. cerevisiae to grow on methanol as a sole carbon and energy source. Six enzymes from the related organism Pichia pastoris were redesigned for expression in yeast, chemically synthesised, and transformed into S. cerevisiae for expression. These enzymes form a novel metabolic pathway that enables the conversion of methanol in S. cerevisiae peroxisomes of into existing central carbon metabolites that can be used to fuel metabolism.
