- Summary
- Isoflavones are a flavanoid subgroup found in a variety of plants with significantly high amounts in soybeans. According to an epidemiologic study, it showed that consumption of soybean isoflavones may be associated with the low incidence rates of some cancers, reduction in the risk of various diseases including cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis as well as menopausal symptoms. Interest in soy isoflavones has increased all over the world thereafter.
This invention is related to a novel method for producing isoflavones with high purities and high biological activities from soybeans. It includes three steps: (1) extraction of soybeans using organic solvent such as edible alcohol or methanol; (2) hydrolysis with acid; and (3) antisolvent crystallization. The procedure is very simple and can be easily adapted for a large-scale manufacture. The product by this method contains a high content (above 60%) of isoflavone aglycones determined by HPLC analysis and exhibits estrogenic activity on human cells. In short, the whole procedure of the invention is not only simple (three steps only) but also low-cost (without using chromatography column for separation).
The product can be widely applied in drugs or as additives for foods, beverages or cosmetics.
