Detailed Technology Description
A device and methods for the efficientcollection of separated biomolecular portions from gel samples.
*Abstract

This technology employs a three-dimensionalseparation strategy that allows for efficient and reproducible results.  Suitable biomolecular samples include, butare not limited to, DNA or RNA.

*Background
The traditional method ofbiomolecular portion separation using gels is very well established, and is thepreferred method in the field; however, the problem with this method is thatbiomolecular portion extraction from the gel is an inefficient process with themajority of the separated fraction being lost in the process. One promisingmethod utilizes a “lab on a chip,” where a silicon wafer or other substrateincludes channels or other physical features that enable manipulation ofsolution(s) and nucleic acid samples. Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) technology isa rapidly expanding area of science. It has applications in biotechnology, medicine, clinical diagnostics, chemical engineering, and pharmaceutics. Still, there is a pressing needto develop a novel method to extract and fractionate nucleic acids and theirprotein complexes, which is compatible with very small sample amounts and has highcollection efficiency of the separated portions.
