Mucus Strengthening-and-Weakening-Formulations to Alter Mucus Barrier Properties
- Technology Benefits
- The formulations:ΓÇóAre safe and inexpensiveΓÇóComprise compounds such as acids/bases, calcium containing salts, lipids, etc. that are naturally occurring in the mucosal environmentΓÇóAre capable of combining with mucus components (such as mucins, oligosaccharides, lysozyme, lactoferrin, IgA, and IgG) to inhibit potential pathogen invasions related to mucosal surfaces such as gastrointestinal tract, respiratory airways, cervico-vaginal surfaces, and ocular surfacesΓÇóPrevent or facilitate microbe/molecule transport through mucus to the underlying epitheliumΓÇóWould be commercially useful for the following applications:o Protection from initial or recurring infections Neonatal intestinal infections Diarrhea Conjunctivitiso Protection from suspected bio-warfare exposureo Facilitation of drug carrier transport

- *Abstract
-
Currently, there is no known mechanism for altering mucus barrier properties. Moreover, the current methods for fighting microbial infection do not prevent the invasion of epithelium by the pathogen. This invention discloses novel mucus strengthening and weakening formulations to alter mucus barrier properties.
