E. coli C1 strain for Intramammary Sensitization of Dairy Cows

Detailed Technology Description
The disclosure relates to a bacterial ghost E. coli C1 used for intramammary sensitization that may improve theoutcome of an intramammary infection in late gestation.

*Abstract

Clinical Mastitis is one of the most common and very costly challengesto the dairy industry. Approximately 40% of clinical mastitis cases areattributed to gram-negative, mostly coliform, bacterial infection.

In a randomized controlled study, Cornell researchers have used aUV-killed strain C1 of E. coli for intramammarysensitization of dairy cows. Their vaccination strategy using this strainresulted in a lower probability of infection, a lower bacteria count, lowersomatic cell counts and milk conductivity, a lower clinical mastitis score,increased milk production and a triggered mucosal immunity in the mammarygland.

PotentialApplications

  • Canbe used to protect against late gestation intramammary infection in dairy cows;
  • Canbe used for challenge studies with the homologous E. coli C1 strain.

Advantages

  • Lowerprobability of infection;
  • Lowerbacteria count;
  • Lowersomatic cell counts and milk conductivity;
  • Lowerclinical mastitis score;
  • Increasedmilk production;
  • Triggered mucosalimmunity in the mammary gland.
