Portal Hypertension and Gastric Varices Treatment

Detailed Technology Description
Balloon-occluded Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration CatheterThe balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) catheter makes treating portal hypertension and gastric varices easier by delivering a combination of sclerosing agents, embolization coils, vascular plugs and/or aortic balloons through a single catheter. Gastric varices, potentially life-threatening conditions, can cause rapid blood loss and require immediate medical intervention. Conventional treatment involves routing at least two catheters through the vasculature to stop the bleeding and then seal or plug the vein. Such delivery sheaths may deliver plugs, sclerosing agents or aortic balloons to the affected area. However, routing them all separately requires a high degree of skill and precision that can prove difficult even for the best surgeon, and if performed improperly puts patients at risk. This new, multi-lumen balloon-occlusion catheter quickly delivers both a vascular plug and microcatheter simultaneously to treat gastric varices.Single CatheterNo existing technologies feature simultaneous delivery of a vascular plug and microcatheter. Doing so requires only one puncture, making it easier and faster for the surgeon to deliver the appropriate therapy. A single catheter remains more stable during delivery of any balloons, vascular plugs, coils or sclerosing agents, thus reducing the risk of complications, such as sclerosing agents reaching the heart or lungs by mistake.BENEFITS AND FEATURES OF BALLOON-OCCLUDED RETROGRADE TRANSVENOUS OBLITERATION CATHETEREverything needed is delivered via a single catheterLess risk to patient – only one catheter is routed vs. two or threeEasier and faster for surgeons to deliver necessary therapyDecreased risk of sclerosing agents reaching other areasPhase of Development - Concept
