Researchers at INL havedeveloped methods and systems for a safer, electrically-triggered, low-pressureinitiator for non-high explosive energetic materials. The Hybrid ExplodingBridge Wire (HEBW) system employs an air gap with the bridge wire, ensuringinitiation only occurs when a potential greater than the threshold voltage of500+ volts is applied. When the wire vaporizes, it throws hot gold particles intoa thermite pellet, which ignites the center hole of a second thermite pellet. As this second pellet burns, hot molten particles are forcefully ejectedthrough the center hole and out the end of the initiator to contact and ignitethe target energetic material, resulting in a thermal initiation with a small pressurewave. This allows for the use of loose energetic powders for the highexplosive.
