Medium-Chain-Length (mcl) Branched Poly(Hydroxyalkanoates) Materials With High Beta Form Crystalline Content, Methods of Production and Unique Uses Thereof
- Detailed Technology Description
- Poly (hydroxyalkanoates)(PHAs) are natural linear polyesters produced by bacteria to store carbon andenergy. The combination of different PHA monomers give rise to materials withdifferent mechanical properties, each with varied commercial applications.Researchersat the University of Delaware have devised an innovative and novel method ofproduction composite poly (hydroxyalkanoates). These PHA copolymers units withbranches of medium-chain-length, exhibit high number of beta form crystals withzig-zag conformation. The cost-effective production method ensures the distinctcrystalline polymorphs. The material produced is bio-based and bio-degradable.
