- Detailed Technology Description
- Novel nanoparticles that indicate or ‘tattle’ if thereis any impeding destruction to the state-of-health for materials.
- *Abstract
-
These nanoparticles may be incorporated into materialsmaking them self-monitoring. This technology, for example, may be applied tosituations in which environmental/performance loads (corrosion, fatigue, radiation effects) can cause materials deterioration. Upon exposure, emitted speciesare easily detected using an NDT portable mass spectrometer while retainedmarkers can be measured using NDT Focused-beam X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer(XRFS) This technology provides accurate detection and leaves no speculation asto whether a system defect has occurred.
- *Background
- Oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) metals are used in extremeenvironments due to their large strain withstanding thresholds. Because ODS metals are used in such harshenvironments, such as in nuclear weapons, high temperature turbines and heatexchange tubes, a method called direct-systems-inspection and defect-detection islimited. Direct-systems inspectionallows for the detection of faults that eventually contribute to or causesystem failures. Non-destructive testing(NDT) methods, such as thermal infrared and ultrasonic imaging, can be used todetect system defects, but require constant vigilance and must be performedroutinely. NDT methods work well, but can only supply speculative data withoutentering the harsh system environment. Furthermore, these methods are time-consuming and costly. There exists a market need for a defect-detection system that isinherent within harsh environments and can expose weaknesses to supplementarydetection aids from the within the system.
