Background Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) includes Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis (UC). Treatment for IBD includes aminosalicytes, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and TNF-alpha inhibitors. Gut microbiota in IBD patients is altered. An effective therapy to treat or prevent relapse of IBD includes probiotics that modulate the gut microbiota in IBD patients. Probiotics that alter the microbiota such as VSL#3 have shown efficacy in treating UC, however additional new approaches to modify the gut microbiome to treat IBD are desirable.
