Plasmonic Stimulation of Electrically Excitable Biological Cells
- Technology Benefits
- Reduced/no tissue damage, Better spatial and temporalresolution, Higher fidelity of transduction, Eliminates unwanted heating
- Detailed Technology Description
- USF inventors have developed designs using gold and other metal nanoparticles possessing plasmonic properties that can be tuned to respond to specific light wavelength sources. Plasmonic stimulations are highly localized, so that they do not spread widely like electrical stimulation. Prosthetic devices, such as cochlear, retinal implants, and cardiac pacemakers can be developed using this technology to have superior properties than the currently utilized electrical stimulation.
