Detecting Blood Coagulation On-Chip

Technology Benefits
Can be used with plasma and/or whole bloodLow-cost method
Technology Application
medical devices used for blood coagulation
Detailed Technology Description
Two traditional laboratory methods of measuring speed of blood coagulation are thromboelastography and prothrombin time; both having significant limitations. Our inventors have developed a new on-chip optical sensor based on back reflection from the on-chip optical waveguide interface. Blood coagulation can be easily tracked by measuring the change in the reflected power. Our simulations show that it can be directly used for the measurements in blood plasma, and with additional signal processing can be used in whole blood.
*Abstract
