*Abstract

BACKGROUND

Polysomnography represents the gold standard method to diagnose various sleep disorders, including apneas and hypopneas. This in-patient procedure requires an extensive number of electrical leads and sensors to monitor heart rate, breathing rate, and brain waves while a person sleeps. In addition to the high cost of this type of diagnostic procedure, the procedure requires several deviations from an individual's typical sleep patterns, namely sleep in a hospital setting and an obstructive monitoring system. These deviations may limit the reliability of diagnoses. Further, once diagnosed, hypopnea has few therapeutic options. These include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and surgery. Recently, an invasive, implantable device (Inspire Therapy) that provides mild electric stimulation to patients during labored breathing during sleep was approved by the FDA as a next generation therapy for hypopnea.

ABSTRACT

Obstructive sleep apnea is the leading cause of sleep disruption, affecting an estimated 3-7% of the population. Current diagnoses often requires a clinical sleep study where clinicians monitor sleep in a sleep study center. This device contributes to the emerging market for home sleep testing, which allows patients to be tested in a more convenient setting and provides more accurate identification of the location of breathing obstruction. Further, the device simultaneously treats apnea through specific stimulation of the obstructed region. This offers an alternative to traditional therapeutic devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device which many patients do not tolerate and are non-compliant. This device would add significant value in two ways: through improved clinical diagnoses of sleep disorders (e.g. marketed to sleep study centers) and as an at-home treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (e.g. marketed to consumers).
