An alpha particle emitting isotope will react and bombard a stable isotope, creating a compound nucleus between an alpha particle and target nucleus. The compound nucleus will then emit a neutron through decay. Both the alpha emitting isotope and the target material will be plated on separate thin metal tapes, and each will be wound onto their own reel. The alpha emiting reel and the target isotope reel will then be unrolled together onto anotehr reel, such that the alpha emitting material and the target material are in close proximity with each other. By rolling the combination of alpha emitting material and target material continuiously, the neutron flux emitted from each layer adds. The cylindrical geometry aids in focusing the neutron flux towards the center, further increasing the neutron flux at that point. The neutron spectrum produced varries depending on the alpha particle energy and the target material used. The produced neutron spectrum may be filtered by other materials to change the neutron spectrum to the desired neutron energy level. The neutron flux produced will be between 1QA8 to 1QA9 depending on material choices and geometry.
