A novel concept for making battery electrodes to simultaneously control macro-/micro-structures of electrodes is developed for addressing present energy storage technology gaps and meeting future energy storage requirements. An electric field (EF) is used to control the microstructures, while additive manufacturing provides control of macro-3D structures and the integration of both scales. The synergistic control of micro-/macro-structures, a novel concept in energy material processing, has demonstrated the potential to provide unprecedented control of electrode structures and to enhance performance. Electrochemical tests show that the new electrodes have superior performance in the specific capacity, areal capacity, and cycle life.
