Creating shadowless images with front projection display systems - 1094

Overview
Front projection display systems are used for both entertainment and business, but they suffer from a fundamental problem--the user caneasily and inadvertently block the projector, creating shadows. Our invention solves this problem by removing displaysurface shadows in real-time to allow the projected image to appear unblemished.
Invention
UK researchers are developing a way to improve the quality of images generated by front projection display systems by removing in real time any shadows that fall upon the screen. By combining a series of cameras and projectors, this system determines relative device positions, derives a depth map for the display surface, and cooperatively renders a blended image that is correct for the user's viewing location. The results is an image that is free of shadows created by an obstruction between the projector and the screen.
Applications
- entertainment
- business environments
- military
Advantages
- real-time detection and removal of shadows caused by a blockage (such as a person or object) between a projector and a screen
