UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURIOffice of Technology Management and Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure Numbers 15UMC016INNOVATION:This instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) tool is designed to improve efficacy for the patient and ergonomics and ease of use for the therapist.BACKGROUND:IASTM is used by clinicians to treat fascial restrictions, including scar tissue and other soft-tissue adhesions that may have resulted from surgery, immobilization, repeated strain, or other mechanisms. IASTM instruments introduce controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue structures, stimulating a local inflammatory response that initiates reabsorption of inappropriate fibrosis or excessive scar tissue and facilitates a cascade of healing activities and remodeling of affected soft tissue structures. MU inventors identified numerous deficiencies in the designs of IASTM tools and developed their own design, focusing on improved ergonomics, ease of use, and patient outcome. Prototypes have been generated and tested, with very positive results.APPLICATIONs:- Scars- Carpal tunnel syndrome- Neck pain- Plantar fascitis- Tendinitis (various)- Epicondylitis- DeQuervain’s syndrome- Joint swelling- Ligament/muscle strains- Bursitis- Reflex sympathetic dystrophy- Back pain- Trigger finger- Hip pain- Shin splints- IT band syndrome- Chronic ankle sprains- Acute ankle sprainsADVANTAGES:- Improved efficacy treatment- Improved ergonomics for therapist- Decreased cost of instrumentPATENT STATUS:- Patents filedCONTACT INFO:Brian Buntaine, Sr. Licensing & Business Development AssociateOffice of Technology Management and Industry RelationsEmail: buntaineb@missouri.eduPhone: 573-882-0470
