Metal-Coated Flexible Dielectric Waveguides For Millimeter-Wave Multi-Lane Wireline Communication

Detailed Technology Description
Researchers at UCLA have developed a metal-coated flexible dielectric waveguide proposed for high-speed wireline communication systems. This waveguide readily conforms to surrounding environments by confining the electromagnetic field (EM) while maintaining flexibility. The strong EM field confinement is confirmed by small power loss discrepancies in comparison to the analytical model. The low cost waveguide has excellent compatibility with large volume manufacturing.

Background

High-speed wireline communication systems are limited by power losses on the order of a few milliwatts. Dielectric waveguides, typically made of plastics configured into hollow tubes, have gained attention due to their energy-efficiency and longer distance data link at millimeter-wave frequencies. While dielectric waveguides show excellent loss performance, they are sensitive to surrounding environments and are not suitable for bundling multiple channels together.
