- *Abstract
-
Mussels owe their incredible adhesion ability to the presence of an unusual amino acid found in its adhesive proteins, called DOPA, which has inspired many material scientists to emulate and improve bioadhesives. Recently, a new DOPA-containing peptide has been generated through collaboration of a group of international scientists. They improved the previously known DOPA-containing peptides by introducing several modifications that now enable self-assembly and increase the number reactive groups in an orderly fashion. The new materials can be functionalized to introduce properties having an ordered structure with controlled orientation of adhesive sites. The micro- and nano-structures of the present invention provide superior adhesive properties versus known bioadhesive polymers. Furthermore, these DOPA-containing polymers can incorporate silver ions forming a silver-coated hydrogels with antimicrobial applications. The novel materials are biocompatible with utility in a variety of pharmaceutical, cosmetic and medical device applications.
