IP Title

Detailed Technology Description
Economical Production of Hydrogen via Artificial Photosynthesis Natural photosynthesis is a process whereby plants use sunlight to create chemicals that they use to store energy.  The chemicals, carbohydrate molecules, such as sugars, are for the plants a form of “solar fuel” – fuel that was created through the use of sunlight. Artificial photosynthesis aims to accomplish a similar goal – to use sunlight to create a fuel which can be used to store energy.  One such fuel is the gas hydrogen.  Hydrogen can be obtained by cracking the water molecule, which is made of oxygen and water.  There has been a lot of research into artificial photosynthesis and various schemes have been demonstrated, however, to date, none of the methods have resulted in an economical process.  The main reason that artificial photosynthesis has not been economical has been the use of very expensive materials and processes. A new method of artificial photosynthesis has been invented that uses inexpensive materials and processes and is therefore much more economical than previous methods.  The new method can break the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen using sunlight.  The hydrogen can be stored for future use in producing clean energy.  The new invention also has other applications in many areas, including the following; Thin Film Photovoltaics, Laser Materials, Infrared Reflective Coatings, and Physical Color, as well other applications. The invention is patent pending and is available for license.  For more information contact; Mark Swaney479-575-7243mswaney@uark.eduRef 17-27
