A Printed Electrical Time Domain Reflectometry Sensing System for Distributed Structural Health Monitoring
APPLICATIONS: This product can be used as a monitoring tool for large scale structures in theaircraft andaerospace industry, civil and infrastructure industry as well as in the oilindustry PROBLEMSADDRESSED:Structural health monitoring of structures isimperative for the longitivity of these structures and to avoid any mishaps. The existing methods are expensive, time-consuming, highly invasive andsuitable only for smaller structures. There is an increasing need fornon-invasive evaluation techniques to detect internal damages in larger laminatedcomposites. Researchers at the University of Delaware have developed a feasiblesolution for this problem.TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION:This invention is a carbon nanotube based compositesensing system for distributed structural health monitoring and non-destructiveevaluation of large scale solid structural bodies such as bridges, airplanewings, or oil wells. The electrical properties of these carbon nanotube integratedsensing systems are exploited using standard measurement techniques in a novelway. These sensors can be used for in-situor ex-situ sensing and can detect anydamage or deformation.STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT:Thistechnology is ready for deployment, but may need additional minor optimizationdepending on the specific field of use.
