Manganese and Ruthenium Single-Phase Compound Electro-catalysis of Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions

Detailed Technology Description
This new material facilitates efficientcatalysis for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions in fuel cells ata fraction of the cost of currently available commercial catalysts and couldalso be used in metal-air batteries.

*Abstract

The newly developed material is anintermixed manganese and ruthenium single-phase oxide compound that facilitatesefficient catalysis for both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolutionreactions. The catalytic performance ofthe new material is competitive with more expensive commercial standardcatalysts, such as platinum and palladium, currently implemented in lowtemperature fuel cells, catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. However, the interchangeable materialdeveloped at Cornell is significantly less expensive than the precious metalscurrently used (estimated to be 30 times less expensive per unit mass than platinum). The manganese ruthenium material can be madein both thin film and particle forms.

This new material offers competitiveperformance at a fraction of the cost in alkaline fuel cells, next generationrechargeable batteries, catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.

Potential Applications

  • Alkaline fuel cells
  • Catalyticconverters
  • Oxygen sensors
  • Metal-air batteries

Advantages

  • Significantly lessexpensive than currently available fuel cell catalysts
