*Abstract

A family of highly fluorinated polymers has beensynthesized with exciting optical and light-emitting properties that promisesto make practical the expansion of polymeric light-emitting diodes(PLEDs).  Unlike other conjugatedpolymers, the novel materials can be processed with fluorinated solvents, enabling fabrication of PLEDs by conventional photolithographic techniques.

While able toachieve the same thin, multi-layered, full color displays as more common OLEDmaterials, these PLEDs can be produced with much more efficient, photolithographic processing in solution as opposed to vacuum deposition. Inaddition, it has been demonstrated that the new light-emitting polymers can befabricated into multi-layered device structures and red-green-blue displaypixels.

Fluorinatedfunctional materials have been shown to be robust and exhibit high chemical stability. These unique properties provide great flexibility in device structure designand processing. This work based on light-emitting devices opens a new paradigmfor solution-processed multi-layer organic device integration as well asphotolithographic patterning, which should be of significant interest to thelarge-area flexible electronics community.
