Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) is a small non-enveloped virus. Infection of chicks early post hatching can lead to severe destruction of the thymus and bone marrow, anemia, growth retardation, and mortality. Researchers have isolated and sequenced CIA-1, a non-cell cultured adapted strain of chicken anemia virus and compared it to two other cell cultured adapted stains, Cux-1 and 26P4. Three open reading frames (ORFs) were identified in CIA-1 and several differences were found between CIA-1 and Cux-1 and 26P4. CIA-1, since it has not been adapted for cell culture is more suitable for use in vaccine production.
