-
This invention describes a method to test for whether feline coronavirus (FCoV) will manifest into the rare but lethal form, feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV).
Using samples from cats known to be infected with FECV or FIPV, a screening survey was conducted using RT-PCR. This survey identified clear mutations associated with the lethal form of the virus. This breakthrough opens the potential for earlier lifesaving measures for infected felines, as well as for any other healthy cats that are housed in their vicinity.
Potential Advantage and Commercial Application
- Diagnostic test for FIPV can be used in animal shelters and other situations where cats are densely housed.
