Electrical Prism: A High Quality Factor Filter for mm Wave and THz Frequencies

Detailed Technology Description
Cornell researchers have recently developed an "electrical prism" capable of filtering extremely high frequency (THz range) signals with a very high quality (Q) factor.

Patent application: 20110215881

*Abstract

The Q factor of a filter is a measure of its selectivity, and as a filter's operating frequency becomes higher, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a high Q factor using conventional techniques. While still allowing the use of conventional components (inductors and capacitors), this novel electrical prism uses a lattice structure to provide a much higher Q factor for the overall filter than the Q factors of the individual components. As in an optical prism, input signals are split up by frequency and different frequencies are diverted in different directions. An output signal of a desired frequency is selected simply by choosing the appropriate output point on the lattice. The device allows greatly improved filtering for any high frequency application. A prototype CMOS chip operating at 50 GHz is available.
