This invention describes the synthesis of macromolecular systems composed entirely of random copolyester amides (coPEAs) with lateral function groups. The new chemical approach detailed within has substantial advantages over existing methods for preparing unconventional amino acid derived polymers. These advantages include lower cost, greater versatility in properties and potential uses, and a controlled biodegradation rate.
