- *Abstract
-
Lagophthalmos is a pathological incomplete closure of the eyelids, resulting in exposure keratopathy, as well as corneal ulceration and globe perforation. Ptosis is an eye disorder with which patients cannot open their eyelids fully, caused by many conditions or diseases. Existing treatments, including traditional surgical interventions, silicone encircling band implantation and eyelid-loading with a metal weight all have their complications.
Cornell investigators utilized magnetic system for automation of eye blinking. Magnetic material is affixed or implanted in the eyelid; an eye covering device, into which electromagnetic material has been incorporated or onto which magnetic material is affixed, is provided. The force of the magnetic field is used to help the patients move the upper eyelid. (see Figure)
This invention provides a convenient, cost-effective solution to treat lagophthalmos and ptosis. More importantly, this invention provides an adjustable system which can be adjusted based on the patient’s condition and can be used on a temporary or longer term.
