- *Abstract
-
The invention relies on unique integrated waveguides that optically trap microspheres in a microfluidic channel. Light transmitted through the waveguide circulates thousands of times around the trapped spheres and these resonances are measured to monitor binding of biomolecules (the microspheres are functionalized such that analytes of interest will bind to them). By observing characteristics such as absorption and refractive index, individual biomolecules can be readily identified. The invention holds great promise in particular for diagnostics where label-free sensing is crucial.
