*Abstract

Building on a unique 63Ni radioisotope power generator concept (Cornell invention D-3687), Cornell researchers have developed an array of self-powered RF devices. The technologies include an RF pulse transponder using a surface acoustic wave device as a transmission frequency selector, an actively transmitting RFID device, and an actively transmitting sensor. In addition to being incredibly small and attachable to virtually any object, the devices' power source, 63Ni, has a very high energy density and long half-life, and is capable of powering the devices for decades.

Potential Applications

  • Long-life embedded sensors
  • Active RFIDs

Advantages

  • Long-lasting self-power
