*Abstract

A method to fabricate polymer filters capable of very high collection efficiencies for nanoparticles was developed. The filters are made with standard industrial photolithography, spin-coating and etching processes. Because of the manufacturing method the size, shape and distribution of the pores can be precisely controlled, and the filters can be made of polypropylene and other hard-to-etch polymers. Polypropylene filters can be electrically charged to improve filtration efficiencies to >90% and even 100% based on modeling and experimental results.

Potential Applications

  • Filtration of nanoparticles
  • Size selection
  • Capturing of biological moieties, e.g. proteins, bacteria and viruses
  • Personal protective equipment and defense applications

Advantages

  • High filtration efficiency & selectivity
  • Precise control of distribution pattern, shape and size of pores
  • Regular spacing compared to other methods - no overlaps or unintended gaps
  • Versatility- can produce any shape and pattern from practically any material
  • Can produce PP filters, which can be electrically charged to attract and hold charged molecules smaller than the pores
