Production of novel polyketide synthases (PKSs)Production of unique cellulose-degrading enzymes (cellulases)
Technology Application
Biofuel production and bioremediationAnti-microbial compound developmentDrug discovery
Detailed Technology Description
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have developed a novel method of manipulating metabolic networks and pathways within anaerobic gut fungi for their use in the production of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes and novel polyketide synthases (PKSs). The novel enzymes can be used in the degradation of lignocellulose (plant biomass), production of biofuels and novel products, and production of antimicrobial compounds.

Background

Anaerobic gut fungi show great potential for metabolic engineering applications. Their natural products include ethanol and hydrogen (of chief interest for biofuels) and putative anti-microbial compounds (i.e. antibiotics and antimycotics). Thus far, anaerobic gut fungi have remained completely unexplored regarding these potential applications.
