- Researchers at UCSB have developed a novel, simple procedure to synthesize polyHIPE blends based on self-assembly and collapse of colloidal dispersions. This procedure makes use of narrow size distribution colloidal particles as precursors of the final dispersed phase and properly designed block copolymers to build up the continuous phase. This procedure allows controlling the morphologies of both the continuous and dispersed phase to an extent well beyond that possible with other currently available techniques. The embodiments of this novel procedure enable the construction of plastic materials having novel transport and barrier properties at potentially low costs.

Background
Emulsions based on water/oil/surfactant systems have been extensively investigated during the past few decades. High internal phase emulsions (HIPE) can be achieved in these systems, in which the dispersed phase is present in a volume fraction exceeding the critical packing ratio of a face-centered-cubic crystal. Multiple efforts have been made more recently to synthesize polymer-based HIPE, or polyHIPE (HIPPE), owing to the potential advantages these structures may have in many applications. However, there exists a need to produce HIPPE compositions wherein the morphologies of both the continuous and dispersed phases can be controlled.
