Piezo Scaler With Laser Capabilities
- Technology Benefits
- This device has combined multiple tools required in therapeutic dentistry, resulting in a more sanitary, time efficient, and ergonomic instrument. A significant consideration whenever power driven instruments are used in dentistry is the time spent changing between various devices and the production of contaminated aerosol which may linger for prolonged periods of time and restrict dental cleaning procedures in specific categories of patients. This device provides multi-functional usage from scaling to measuring the gingival pocket depth while simultaneously reducing bacterial load resulting in a reduced risk of disease transfer inside or outside the oral cavity between the clinical and the patient.
- Technology Application
- This device may be used for all dental hygiene prophylactic procedures that encompass scaling and debridement including routine prophylaxis, periodontal maintenance, surgical and nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
- Detailed Technology Description
- Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have developed an innovative dental device that combines multiple instrumentation and steps required during periodontal and dental hygiene procedures into one hand held, ergonomically friendly instrument. Currently in dentistry, periodontal probes, ultrasonic scalers, curettes, and dental lasers are used separately. Time is taken away from patient care each time the clinician changes instruments. This all-in-one novel device removes hard and soft deposits from the teeth, measures oral structural parameters while selectively performing bacterial reduction and promoting soft tissue healing.
