*Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is at epidemic proportions in the US and countries such as Mexico.  As a result, the market for self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) now approaches $8.8B per year.  These SMBG products typically require a painful finger stick to obtain blood, and give only an immediate snapshot of a patient's blood glucose levels.  More sophisticated blood glucose level methods are used to regulate implanted insulin pumps. However, currently, there is no clinically practical way to determine a total 24hr blood glucose levels for patients   Doctors believe a total 24hr blood glucose level sensor would vastly improve their treatment of the growing diabetic population by enabling the accurate diagnoses and monitoring of type II diabetes

Investigators at University of California at Berkeley have addressed this need by inventing a 24hr blood glucose sensor.  Remarkably, this device is truly pain-free through the use of a patented microneedle interface developed by the investigators, and during testing is similar to wearing a bandage.  In volume production, the cost per unit will be disruptively low as compared to current SMBG products.  

Once the 24hr testing period has elapsed, glucose and other blood analytes are stably engaged, and the device is sent to a lab for analysis by standard mail.  By example sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate and other blood components can be similarly tested by the device. Current standard laboratory blood analyte systems provide the final 24hr total blood level of each analyte.  In some cases, a time-sequenced level over the 24hr test period is provided.

This invention also provides the first clinically practical magnesium blood level sensor.   Additionally, due the integration over 24 hrs,  the device allows testing of very low concentration blood analytes which were previously unascertainable.
