-
This research has shown that cerium-based nanocoatings on active metal alloys (e.g magnesium, aluminum or iron based alloys) with optimum bandgaps Eg and Ce(III)/Ce(IV) couple ratios absorb a large portion of solar radiation with a subsequent water splitting. The bandgap and the ratio of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) species of the fabricated device can be tuned to be able to drive assisted or unassisted photoelectrolysis of water at room temperature.
