In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system to oscillate at maximum amplitude at certain frequencies, known as the system's resonance frequencies. At these frequencies, even small periodic energy exicting the resonance can produce large amplitude vibrations, because the system stores vibration energy. When damping is small, the resonance frequency is approximately equal to the natural frequency of the system. In electronic systems, various resonances occur for many reasons, like resonance or the die capacitance with the interconnect inductance, power plane resonances, resonances of traces on the PCB, cable resonance, board resonance, resonances between boards that are cable connected, and structural resonanaces of the enclosure. All of these resonances have in common that they worsen the electromagnetic compatibility performance of the system. At the resonance frequency they increase the coupling of electromegnetic waves in the vicinity of the electronic system with the lcal voltages and currents of the system. This can increase the amount of unitended RF emitted by the sytstem and it can make the system more susceptable to RF energy in the surrounding area, leading to RF immunity problems, etc. This application describes a method for identifying the resonance frequencies, the location of the resonances and the Quality factor of the resonances. Further the harmonic relationship between resonances of the same structure is identified.
