Abstract of US Patent 6,709,744 - Bioactive materials: Bioactive substantially silica-free glass material with a hydroxyapatite layer thereon is described, as well as methods for producing hydroxyapatite on a borate glass.Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: A bioactive, borate glass composition has been developed which quickly reacts with liquids at body temperature, 37°C, to form a crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) phase. Advantages of this borate glass composition is that it is free of silca, melts at lower temperatures (1100°C) and reacts more quickly with simulated body fluids to form hydroxyapatite than bioactive silicate glasses. Tests in rats show that this borate glass is biocompatible and bonds to living bone in a manner similar to that of the more well-known bioactive silicate glasses such as 45S5. Tests in rats show that this borate glass is biocompatible and bonds to living bone in a manner similar to that of the more well known bioactive silicate glasses.
