Improvement in the Treatment of Acute and Chronic Itch
- Technology Benefits
- More effective in treating chronic itch
- Technology Application
- Itch Treatment Effective in inhibiting spinal transmission of itch signaling
- Detailed Technology Description
- Chronic itch accompanies many skin diseases (e.g. atopic dermatitis and psoriasis) as well as systemic diseases (e.g. kidney and liver diseases). Chronic itch affects upwards of 20% of the world population and represents a severe clinical problem with a significant negative impact on the quality of life. Current treatment modalities for chronic itch are limited. Antihistamines usually provide weak if any itch relief To address the need of effective itch treatment, researchers at University of California, Davis have discovered a novel combination of drugs that is more effective in treating chronic itch by blocking the spinal transmission of itch signaling. The invention is supported by preclinical research data.
