Spray Deposition Sensor System

Technology Benefits

Capable of sensing the presence and location of multiple droplets on a sensor surface; and Reusable and inexpensive.

Technology Application

Information is suitable for transmission via a wireless network to a centralized data-collection system, allowing temporal spray deposition rates to be quantified and recorded Quantification of spatial and temporal variation in droplet deposition within an agricultural field would be possible by deploying multiple sensory systems that have been networked together

Detailed Technology Description

A novel method to detect and quantify spray deposition on a surface has been discovered by researchers at the University of California, Davis. Historically, agricultural spray deposition monitoring and measurements has relied on the use of water- and oil-sensitive paper to document deposition rates. This technique requires the placement of cards on the target or in the target area, then, after spraying, the collection, scanning and post processing of stains on cards. This process is time consuming and labor intensive. Moreover, this precludes the possibility of real-time monitoring and removes the potential for feedback control of spraying. The incorporation of an electronic sensor with the ability to transmit deposition rates via a wireless network would have great advantages over the current methods. A prototype sensor to detect and quantify spray deposition on a surface has been developed and tested.
