Optical Router Architecture

Technology Benefits
Low packet loss Low end-to-end delay and jitter High scalability Eliminates Head-of-Line blocking effect without using internal switch fabric speed up
Technology Application
Interface local area networks (LAN) with the supernet Buffering queue implemented as optical random access memory Reduce packet loss in optical networks
Detailed Technology Description
Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed an optical router architecture that takes advantage of two classes of all-optical variable queuing buffer components. This provides an optical router architecture with all-optical variable input-queuing or an output-queuing buffer that may boast the excellent scalability, provide versatile wavelength-aware queuing, buffering, arbitrating and load-balancing functions with the QoS/CoS (Quality of Service/Class of Service) capability for the optical packets in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) communication network. Furthermore, the optical router architecture achieves low packet loss rate and eliminates the head-of-line blocking effect without introducing the internal switch fabric speed-up, which are critical technical difficulties while building a large traditional crossbar-based input/output-buffered electronic router.
