Invention
This image processing algorithm aids the visualization of three-dimensional images used in many different types of medical diagnoses. Medical imaging has many applications, including locating and evaluating tumors as well as diagnosing various diseases. Researchers at the University of Florida have developed an intuitive image processing algorithm that quickly estimates the volume of objects imaged by 3D scans, greatly reducing the time needed to analyze an object of interest. The algorithm easily integrates with a graphical user interface (GUI), imaging tool, or picture archiving and communication system (PACS).Application
Image processing algorithm to reduce analysis time in medical imagingAdvantages
- Reduces need for manual inputs, generating volume estimates with increased efficiency
- Integrates easily with established imaging tools, offering practicality and minimizing adaptation costs
- Offers flexible image processing, adjusting for application in multiple markets and imaging systems
Technology
This image-processing procedure flexibly integrates into all imaging applications. The algorithm employs polar thin plate splines rather than active contour models, enabling anatomy independent surface analysis of different objects without needing adjustments. This algorithm analyzes the volumetric structure of any approximately spherical surface shape and removes the need of either a knowledge base or predefined positions for identification.
