Invention

These dual-mode mobile device displays improve screen visibility in both high and low ambient light environments while using less energy. Mobile device users regularly take their laptops and cell phones from indoors to outdoors, moving from low to high ambient light situations and from dark to sunny areas. In these situations, the screen visibility of the devices is very poor. Users might decide to maximize the brightness setting on their devices to improve visibility. This is an insufficient solution, however, as extending battery life is a priority for many mobile device users.

Researchers at the University of Florida have developed device displays that would allow the user to enable an energy efficient, reflective electrochromic mode that increases visibility in bright environments, and to switch to a light-emitting mode in dark environments.

Applications

Energy efficient displays that emit light or change color, making them visible day or night, including but not limited to: outdoor advertising signs, E-readers, cell phones, computer screens, and emergency or safety lighting; emissive displays embedded in active windows and goggles

Advantages

  • Illuminates without external light, reducing energy and materials costs
  • Uses minimal current in electrochromic mode, extending battery life
  • Makes screens of cell phones, computers, and e-readers visible in both bright and dark environments, providing needed improvements for widely used devices

Technology

Conventional displays operate using one of two kinds of technologies: emissive or reflective. Devices that operate well in darker conditions either emit light directly or use a back-lighting technology. Other devices that work well in bright conditions use reflective technologies (either electrochromic or liquid crystal), changing their color or reflection pattern of incident light. This display technology developed by University of Florida researchers uses both emissive and reflective technologies with electroactive material that acts as both the color-changing electrochrome and emissive layer without the need for a secondary light source. The display switches from one mode to the other by varying which pair of electrodes the electric field applies across.
