- The SMG can be used in a number of applications: assembly of circuit boards; manipulation of moderately-heavy equipment; and any task where currently SCARA systems are used. The market segments for the SMG system are:Manipulation; Machine Tools; Automated Assembly.The SMG bears features absent in the prior art: All four motors are placed on the base, like the 4DOFPR, but the motion is transmitted to the end-effector by only two legs, the layout being fully symmetrical in that all motors are assigned the same load. The reduced number of legs amounts to a simpler architecture and a simpler kinematics, the likelihood of self-collisions being reduced, as compared to the four-leg architecture of the 4DOFPR. A simple kinematics means a simple control system and a more reliable operation.Various arrays are possible, depending on the type of application intended, while keeping the essential features of the device. Identical motors performing identical tasks means ease of programming and maintenance as well as equal wear.Drawings and animations of the various layouts have been produced.
